WHY IS PRICING A KITCHEN RENOVATION SO HARD?
- Lack of experience: Unlike, say, a routine car maintenance expense, bathroom remodels are not something most people budget for on a regular basis, so they may not have a frame of reference for how much things cost.
- Unexpected costs: We provide a very detailed proposal, but from time to time all contractors run into unforeseen circumstances. There’s no way to see behind your walls. The demolition process may uncover surprises like mold, rot, or plumbing and electrical issues.
- Comparison challenges: It can be difficult to compare prices due to the fact that bathroom remodels are so customized. Looking at a neighbor’s renovation, or relying on ballpark figures online, might not give you an accurate assessment of what your project will cost simply due to the vast range of possibilities.
- Optimism bias: Being overly optimistic about how much can be accomplished for a certain amount of money in a certain time frame can lead to underestimating the final cost of the remodel.
So what are things you should consider? Let’s dive in!
BATHROOM COST FACTORS
Truly accurate pricing can only come through your project manager/estimator, but, here are the general elements that make up the cost of a bathroom remodel.
The biggest factors that affect the price of a bathroom remodel can be broken down into two main categories: the scope of the project and the materials you choose.
Scope of the project: This refers to how extensive your renovation will be. A simple cosmetic refresh and fiberglass shower surround, and new fixtures will cost less than a major overhaul that involves changing the layout, moving plumbing or electrical lines, or knocking down walls.
Materials: The quality and type of materials you select for everything from shower and wall tile, flooring and fixtures will have a big impact on the overall cost. For example, custom-made shower using tile, concrete and glass will set you back a lot more than pre-fabricated drop in shower surround.
Common cost categories:
- Project management
- Communication
